JERUSALEM Jerusalem is the inspiration for these mixed media collages. I began the series following a recent visit to Israel. However, my strong connection to Jerusalem began four decades earlier when I arrived as a young volunteer on a one-year program and stayed on for another seven eventful years. These works incorporate digital images of stone from the Old City's Jewish, Moslem and Christian Quarters. I crop, cut and rotate squares from my photographs and combine them with similarly colored and textured alcohol-ink papers. I work intuitively, but use a grid matrix as an integral part of my creative process. The spaces between the squares define the grid, while the extended strips bring the eye back to the picture plane.
In each collage I create the illusion of space - an abstract landscape integrating diverse fragments into a harmonious composition....a metaphor of hope for the City of Jerusalem.
